KEEPING

 The Promise
by Jane Hirshfield

Stay, I said
to the cut flowers.
They bowed
their heads lower.

Stay, I said to the spider,
who fled.

Stay, leaf.
It reddened,
embarrassed for me and itself.

Stay, I said to my body.
It sat as a dog does,
obedient for a moment,
soon starting to tremble.

Stay, to the earth
of riverine valley meadows,
of fossiled escarpments,
of limestone and sandstone.
It looked back
with a changing expression, in silence.

Stay, I said to my loves.
Each answered,
Always.

THE HORSECAT

I posted this photograph of a window with a horse statue behind the curtain,
Deanna saw a cat...so she made this charming line drawing over a print of it!
I just love it.

ECCENTRIC

Today is the aphelion--the point in the year when the Earth is at its farthest distance from the Sun. The Earth and all the other planets have orbits that are "eccentric," a slightly squashed circle, and the Sun is slightly closer to one end of the ellipse. The perihelion--the point in the orbit when we're closest to the Sun, occurs in January, and at that time we're about 5 million kilometers closer than we are at aphelion in July.
